If you Need a Dental Crown, You may want to try CAD/CAM

At Southlake Dental in Merrillville, IN we are proud to offer our patients the newest and best technologies to make procedures faster, better, and more comfortable. One way we do that is with CAD/CAM technology for dental crowns.

Do I Need a Dental Crown?

You might need a dental crown if you suffer from or need any of the following:

  • A cracked tooth
  • A broken tooth
  • A badly decayed tooth
  • A failing dental bridge or crown
  • A dental implantwoman smiling pointing to her teeth

Dental crowns are thin ceramic shells meant to cover, build up, or replace teeth. Traditionally getting a crown meant scheduling at least two appointments. The first appointment would be to treat the tooth if it was decayed, broken, or infected then we would take an impression and send away for your permanent dental crown. While the crown was being made in a dental lab, patients would wear a temporary crown. Once the final crown was complete, the patient would come in for their final procedure. This method took a lot of time, and often, temporary crowns were hard to live with. But now, Southlake Dental has technology in the office that can craft a permanent dental crown in a single appointment.

CAD/CAM Technology

In order to place a same-day dental crown at our Merrillville dental office, we will first prepare your natural tooth to receive the restoration and then take a digital impression of your teeth. Unlike a goopy impression tray, digital impressions are simply photos taken of your teeth. These impressions accurately represent the 3-dimensional position of your natural teeth so that your restoration fits perfectly.
We then digitally design the crown, considering your bite, adjacent teeth, and aesthetic preferences. We transfer this digital design to our in-house CAD/CAM mill that mills your crown to the exact dimensions of the design. We then check the milled restoration for a proper fit and make any adjustments as necessary. The crown is then custom stained and glazed to match your smile, and fired in a ceramic oven to increase durability. Finally, the restoration is cemented into place.

Caring for a Dental Crown

Before you leave our Merrillville dental practice, we will give you instructions on caring for your new restoration. The restoration is fully functional, but you should remember that it requires special care to prevent damage and the need for replacement. If you practice proper oral hygiene and schedule regular dental cleanings, your new restoration will last for many years.

An added tech bonus at Southlake Dental is our smile design software. If you need a crown, or several restorations, we can provide precision design so you can achieve your dream smile. Smile design software helps our Merrillville dentists analyze your facial features and preview what treatments will look like once complete. You can see how veneers, crowns, or other procedures will enhance your smile ahead of time. Smile design software is a win-win as it helps the doctor make customized suggestions for your smile, and you can see the final result before ever sitting in the chair!
